From Ted

“I am a figurative painter with a view to the human condition and the natural world. I try to express our times as powerfully, eloquently, and realistically as I see the brave new world and the people in it.“

All good artists admire and are influenced by other artists; while I admire the good and great of all time, I do have a special interest in expressionism and the Neue Sachlichkeit (new objectivity) of the early twentieth century. I do feel that the arts and sciences are mankind’s greatest achievements. I feel fortunate to be a small part of the great tradition of figurative art.

I have never felt the need to explain my work, date my paintings or to be “original” in today’s general sense of the word; other than by expressing that which is natural to me. I can only hope that viewers will find visual pleasure, serious thought, and some art in my paintings.

About Ted

Theodore (Ted) Wetherbee was born in 1933 in Middletown, Connecticut to parents interested in the arts. They moved to Buffalo, New York in 1939. Ted was raised in Western New York and was influenced by the landscape and people of the region. He accompanied his mother who attended art classes given by Isaac Soyer during the 1940's. He also met Charles Burchfield at that time. Upon graduation from high school, he moved to New York City and attended the Brooklyn Museum Art School where he came in contact with a number of artists including Ben Shahn, Reuben Tam, Isaac, Moses and Raphael Soyer, as well as fellow students Walter Williams and William Gothard.

Friday, August 18: Convo at The COMMA
Meet the Artist, Meet the Council

Join us an extra evening with Artist on View Ted Wetherbee and the Arts Council for Wyoming County at the first Convo at The COMMA on Friday, August 18.

A career retrospective of Ted Wetherbee's work, As I See It, was published in 2020 by the Arts Council for Wyoming County (ACWC) through grant funding. The COMMA is proud to serve as a pass-through for the council for sales of As I See It through the course of Wetherbee's show with us.

All proceeds from sales of As I See It through The COMMA go directly to the ACWC and the arts programming supported by the council's work in Western New York. Representatives of the Arts Council for Wyoming County will be in attendance to share the work and publication process.

Join us for an evening with the artist and council on August 18 for artist remarks and an examination of his figurative work. Wetherbee will be on hand to sign copies of any books purchased that evening and to answer questions about his work.

6:15 p.m.
Doors open for Viewing: 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
